Nature is absolutely gorgeous, but most people tend not to look further than the surface. Yet, nature becomes even more beautiful the more closely it is inspected. Perhaps my favorite quote that proves this assertion is from Richard Feynman. He was discussing nature with a friend who happened to be an artist. This friend told Dr. Feynman that his view of the flower was better because he could appreviate the aesthetics more precisely; that the scientist picks apart the flower until it is reduced to its base materials and it is no loger beautiful. And Dr. Feynman’s response was:
“At the same time I see much more about that flower than he sees. I could see the cells and the complicated actions inside which also have a beauty. I mean it’s not just beauty at this dimension of 1 cm, but there’s also beauty at the smaller dimensions; the inner structure also the processes the fact that the colors and the folower evolved for the insicet sto pollinate it. It’s interesting. It means that the insects could see the color. It adds a quetston does that aesthetic sense exist at the lower forms? All kinds of interesting questions which science only adds to the excitement, mystery, and awe of a flower. It only adds; it doesn’t subtract from the beauty of a flower.”
To me, this quote sums up everything I love about the science of nature. Nature already exists as this beautiful thing we as humans can experience, but the scientist is even more priveliged. They are capable of understanding the intracies behind nature, from photosynthesis to the interactions of quarks. Comprehending the way the universe works brings tremendous joy. For example, consider this absolutely breathtaking scene from Sweden:
This forest, is actually a single tree. Sort of. This system of trees is known as Pando which is called a clonal tree. Each of these individuals is genetically identical and shares a root system. Now, absolutely anyone can look at this photo and recognize the beauty of nature. However, the scientist’s understanding of the natural processes enhances the perception of nature’s beauty. The process of capturing light from the sun and converting it to glucose through a series of electron transfers called photosynthesis; the way in which enzymes work together to unzip the DNA and make an exact copy of itself which is then released into the environment to bring life to an entirely new individual; even looking as far back as the single photon projected from the core of the sun, taking billions of years to fight its way to the surface and be projected into intrestellar space, finally making its way towards Earth where it will be regarded as such a valuable commodity. All of these things increase one’s appreciation and awe of nature. Once you understand these details, it is impossible to look at the object without experiencing the same wonder as when the ephiphany of comprehension first dawned.
The elegance of nature, its tendency to find the most simple solution to any problem, its ability to adapt and respond to the environment around it is unquestionably marvelous. Like Feynman said, “Nature’s going to come out the way She is.” Nature is an amalgamation of finites, of equations, and of interactions. She has always existed in that way, and she always will, regardless of whether we are here to observe her grandeur or not. We are here merely to strive to understand the [wonders] of nature and receive the accompanying joy. Our lives flit in and out of existance in the blink of an eye to Her and the our endeavours are what make us important in the scheme of nature.
